The only official legal recognition of an individual's marriage in India is their marriage registration. Although India is one of the most diverse countries in the world, with a variety of cultures, ceremonies, traditions, and religions, the law is quite strict about marriage registrations. Marriages are seen as one of the most auspicious days in the lives of the couple in love and their families.
What we already know about marriages in India
According to a 2016 report, an estimated 12 million marriages take place in India in a year. While this does seem like a lot, this number is now on the decline. Some believe it is due to the changing mindset regarding marriage, however, the tiresome process of marriage registration certainly doesn't make the deed any easier.
Since a civil registration is a must for a couples to prove they are married, here are some essentials you should know. In 2006, the Supreme Court issued mandatory registration of marriages in order to protect the rights of women. Marriages can be registered under the Hindu Marriages Act, 1955, or the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
Marriages entail far too much work just to have that one special day going off without flaws. While civil registration is a mandatory requirement, irrespective of religion, it does add additional stress to all the planning. But here’s some good news. With online marriage registrations, couples can focus on the more fun parts of the marriage while finishing the tiresome registration in just a matter of minutes. Sounds good, doesn't it?
How to go about with online registrations?
In order to apply for an online registration and save yourself the hassle of standing in long queues, waiting for the job to get done, here’s what you need to do. Select your district and continue to fill in husband’s details. Select the ‘Registration of marriage certificate” option and fill in all the necessary information. Once the form is filled, choose an appointment date that will suit you and “Submit Application.”
Once this is done, you will receive a number on the acknowledgment slip. Download and print the acknowledgement slip and application form which you will have to carry along for your appointment.
Next Step: Appointment
The good news is that if you have registered your marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, you are likely to receive an appointment within 15 days from the date of registration. For those marriages registered under the Special Marriage Act, it may take about 60 days to get an appointment.
When going for the appointment, the couple should remember to take a witness along. This should be someone who was present during the wedding registration. In addition, the witness or she should carry some proof of residence along with a PAN card.

Under marriage proof, the husband and wife may bring along any proof that indicates their wedding has been solemnized. It can either be the wedding invitation or temple marriage receipts. A driving license, passport, visa or ration card would work for identity and address proof and lastly, a birth certificate or school certificate to show their age.
All of these documents should be submitted along with individual passport sized photographs of the husband and wife at the time of appointment.
